Look to the Stars! Astronomy & Telescope Programs at Manitoba Museum

Featuring state of the art Digistar 5® technology, the Planetarium at the Manitoba Museum is the place to learn about stars! The Planetarium is now offering two special opportunities to learn more about our night skies.  Eyes to the Skies is a four-part evening adult program that takes place in the Planetarium where you can learn the difference between Orion’s belt and Cassiopeia’s throne. And two seminars in the Auditorium will help you choose and use a telescope: How to Choose a Telescope and, Using Your New Telescope.

Eyes to the Skies 4-evening Program
Learn the basics of astronomy and navigating the night sky. Eyes to the Skies takes would-be star gazers on an in-depth tour of Manitoba’s night sky including constellations, planets, the Moon and more. “We use images and video, hands-on demonstrations, handouts and the Digistar 5® technology of the Planetarium Star Theatre, to make sure aspiring astronomers will be able to navigate the stars like a pro by the end of this course,” says program developer Mike Jensen.

Telescope Seminars
Choosing a telescope can be a daunting task, especially when it’s a gift for someone else. Learn the basics of how telescopes work and what the options are at How to Choose a Telescope, a three-hour seminar taught by planetarium astronomer Scott Young. “Selecting a first telescope is like buying a car: there’s no ‘best’ model, but there is one that best fits its owner, says Young. “Participant will learn the basics of telescopes and what to look for when selecting one, and receive tips on accessories for the first-time astronomer.
Saturday, December 2, 2017 from 1 pm to 4pm

Once you’ve chosen a telescope you`ll likely need to learn how to use it. Whether it’s a new holiday gift or one you’ve had for years, the Using Your New Telescope hands-on workshop demonstrates the basics of telescope set-up, use, and maintenance, and provides time for some one-on-one demonstration using your own telescope.
